Castle Rock Community Information

Named for the prominent rock formation that overlooks the town, Castle Rock features several planned developments tied together by its historic downtown. First settled in the 1870s, the town soon became a center for rhyolite mining and an important station for north-south railroad traffic.

Currently home to slightly more than 50,000 people, Castle Rock provides its residents with a small town atmosphere, 15 neighborhood and community parks, including the recently opened Matney Park (and currently under construction Phillip S. Miller Park, which will be home to an indoor field house and pool), a historic downtown shopping district, clean air, and an overall high quality of life. Castle Rock is the county seat for Douglas County, which was ranked fourth in the nation for Quality of Life by the American City Business Journals.

The town lies at an elevation of 6,202 feet in the Plum Creek Valley along Interstate 25 at the base of the Rocky Mountains. The climate is known to be one of the best in the nation with more than 300 days of sunshine, clear blue skies and less than 15 inches of precipitation each year.

Castle Rock provides several indoor and outdoor leisure opportunities including the Community Recreation Center, 400 acres of parks, the Red Hawk Ridge Municipal Golf Course and the Hidden Mesa open space. The Castle Rock Recreation Center features a 25-yard swimming pool, steam and sauna rooms, gym, indoor track, pro shop, and other amenities that residents can fully take advantage of. The Hidden Mesa Open Space provides visitors and residents with several miles of trails for horseback riding, hiking, and biking. Residents who enjoy spending time in the great outdoors will want to check out the Hidden Mesa Trail and its 1,224-acres of open space, grass and shrub lands, and rock formations. Residents and visitors can also enjoy a full range of shopping experiences from downtown boutiques to department stores and the Outlets at Castle Rock, or enjoy dining on anything from fast food to gourmet.
